Why to Live in NYC

I shall not talk too much about this food because you need to find out for yourself (if possible). Why live in NYC? Because you can eat all of this fabulousity in one weekend! First off, my favorite tacos in NYC from La Esquina Taqueria (pictured are the fish and pork varieties). Up next the hidden gem Vinegar Hill House (pictured are the smoked trout sandwich and egg with tomato). Last but not least is Fette Sau. Incredible bar-b-q in Williamsburg. Grab a whiskey, make friends in line, chillax, then over order!

Turkey Pasole

I have been taunted by the beautiful bag of Rancho Gordo hominy (available online or at Marlow and Daughters in BK) sitting in my pantry, knowing the sooner I use it the better it would be. Go to the Rancho Gordo sight for directions on preparing hominy and roasting peppers. On that note go there for practically anything involving Mexican food from scratch.

My conflict being Pasole and Menudo areĀ  possibly two of my favorite Mexican dishes. Well, the smell of trip alone illuminates the potential of that ever being in my apt. Then there is pasole, there are a million ways to make it. I love green pasole (no meat), pork pasole, turkey posole, etc. Since I could not find tomatillos at the market I went with a posole/turkey chili hybrid. The results were not disppointing, I ate mine with some fresh cilantro and warm tortillas. I wouldn’t mind some cornbread either. Honestly, if I had the traditional garnishes for menudo I would definitely opt for them.

Turkey Pasole

1 lb Rancho Gordo white corn posole/ hominy or 2 cans
1 1/2 lbs ground turkey
1 beer
1 large can tomatoes
3 chipotles in adobo (plus 2 T of adobo)
2 roasted pablanos
2 roasted jalepenos
1 onion diced
3 cloves minced
2 T chili powder
1 1/2 T Mexican oregano
6 c chicken broth
salt and pepper

Optional Garnish
shredded cabbage
julienned radish
avocado
cilantro
lime
tortillas
Saute onion, add ground turkey and garlic, and brown. Add chili powder, chipotles and adobo, and oregano. Add beer, simmer for a couple of minutes. Add tomatoes and crush with hands. Add roasted peppers, salt, pepper, and broth. Simmer for 15 minutes. Add prepared hominy. Simmer another few minutes.

Crack Brownies

Crack Brownies
I was so inspired by the first episode of Jamie Oliver’s new show “Food Revolution” that I came up with a brilliant recipe. Remember the part where they were at the fattest family on earth’s house and all of that food was on the table, the pizza, corndogs, nuggets, etc. Well…It looked delicious right? Right. But what was missing? Those poor fucks had no dessert.
Oh, did I get the message wrong?
Honestly I made this b/c I was emptying out the cabinets of my apt. which I just signed a new least for (was subletting) and will be getting new cabinets. When I happened upon a plethora of garbage from the previous tenant. I am not judging. After all I am using this. So I found this box of chocolate lovers brownies, some reese’s cups, and was waiting for a reason to use that frozen cookie dough she left. Well…and there you have it, my crack brownies. I was going to throw in some nuts, but figured why would we add something of purpose at this point.
So immediately out of the oven, because I have the patience of a toddler, they were a bit too gooey because of the cookie dough. Unfortunately, they seem to be getting better everyday, perfectly chewy with little bites of surprises hidden within each bite and my addiction increasing. I am on antibiotics (not drinking or smoking) and have substituted my vices with these brownies. Mind you I live alone and there is not a soul to supervise or scold me. Being a grown up sure can be dangerous! I think I will throw them away tomorrow.
My advice, just don’t have these things lying around, it is not good for anyone. I am glad they will be out of my life soon.
Moral of the story friends…Jamie Oliver is right.

Ribollita (sorta)

What do you do when you make dinner for your friends and they decide not to eat the baguette you bought for them to soak up the delicious pasta juice? Because, now after the third bottle of wine they are counting calories. Well, I couldn’t bare to watch it go to waste so I did what any peasant would do and made soup. Since I do not want to piss off any Italians I will admit this is not 100% authentic there are no beans and might be a bit more tomato based than usual. However, in the spirit of the nature of the soup I used what I had. I might even add more ingredients as the week goes on. As long as you have tomato of some sort and leftover bread you are good to go, use your imagination for the rest (or the confounds of your wallet).

2 t evoo
3 cloves of garlic
1 t chili flake
1 can peeled tomatoes
1 bunch of kale
3/4 leftover baguette torn
1 c water
salt and pepper
parmesean or pecorino to garnish
Heat oil in large pot, add smashed garlic cloves, when fragrant, add chili flake and simmer for a bit, don’t burn. Add tomatoes and crush with hands or spoon, add water and simmer for about 10 minutes, season. Add chopped kale and cook over low heat until wilted (I ended up adding a bit more water). Add bread and fold into soup. Let simmer until you are ready to eat.
Garnish with cheese and fresh pepper.

Blue Bell

I don’t know if I have mentioned this before or if my affection for meat and Mexican food did not make it apparent enough, but I am from the South. Yes, the second greatest state in the nation, Texas. I live in NYC now and have pretty much any cuisine or culinary novelty one could ever hope for. However, sometimes there are flavors that just cannot be replicated by fancy local ice cream makers (ahem…Van Leeuween) or even the never-ending variety of Ben and Jerry’s at the bodega. So on a recent trip to Texas I mosied on down to the grocery store and parked the car as close as I could to the front door and went for the freezer section. Not only was I thrilled to see Blue Bell was on sale for $5 a half-gallon but apparently in the three years I have been away, they had come out with some amazing new flavors. You will not find these in a NYC bodega; Lemon Ice Box Pie, Delta Blues, Candy Jar and Southern Blackberry Cobbler to name a few.

Considering cobbler and Blue Bell are two things I can’t get in NY, I went for the Souther Black Berry Cobbler. While not enough to make me move back to Texas, it was pretty damn close. There were big luscious swirls of black berry with chunks of shortbread like crusted nestled in the perfectly, simple ice cream. Heaven. Too bad my flight was the next day and I did not even get close to finishing it.
Please let me know if there are any new flavors or old hidden classics I should know about next time I am in town. Or better yet, if you live in NY let me know of any Blue Bell source and a great substitute.

My “No Bullshit” Guac Wins!

And I bullshit you not. At last night’s Guactacular Invitational, hosted by NachosNY.com, I took home the People’s Choice Award, which were these salt and pepper shakers you see below, for my “No Bullshit” guacamole recipe. The trick was making the guac on-site, as fresh as possible. Pretty much everyone else brought it from home.

dogsitting

So I haven’t posted in two months. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been cooking. As a matter of fact that is probably the only constructive thing I have been doing lately outside of dogsitting (see above) and cleaning up after my two cats. They require so much attention it is unreal.

Recently the white one has un-pottytrained himself. Yes, that is right, un-pottytrained, because he loathes the low-grade litter my bf put in their box last week. I can’t complain too much though because he is using the bath tub which is really close to the toilet, so he has the right idea and it is easy to clean.

If you have already read this far you are either a) really irritated because you wanted to read about some foodie shit or b) rather entertained because you are also a crazy cat person. If you fall into the latter category I recommend you join me in spending your lonely weekends with your cats (and a friend if you have one) and this game. I actually don’t own it yet but surely after this posting someone will get the hint for my upcoming birthday (Jan 2).
